The June 2022 issue of the scientific journal Laser & Photonics Reviews (LPR) features the work of Frédéric Grillot, Professor at the Optical Telecommunications Group (GTO) of the LTCI.

GTO members conduct advanced research on very high speed transmissions, optical network architectures, advanced lasers for communications, integrated photonics and distributed fiber optic sensors. LPR is a review specialized in the field of optics and photonics, with a strong impact factor, and constitutes a privileged showcase for the valorization of this research.

The maturating of III–V laser technology intensifies the exploration of complex optical configurations based on integrating III–V and silicon photonics. The photograph chosen for the cover shows integrated micro-resonators that carry data in an integrated photonic circuit and relates to article number 2100620 in the journal.  Frédéric Grillot, in collaboration with an international team of researchers, describes a laser theory, beyond the customary quasi-mode approximation for treating resonator out-coupling, for understanding the physics underlying spectral narrowing to Hz-level, spontaneous-emission limited lasing linewidth. This theory will serve as an analytical tool for parametric studies to produce timely results in engineering design.
